Democratic Republic of Congo Update: A Second Round of Elections?

General elections were held in the DRC on July 30, 2006, the first multiparty elections in the country after 32 years of brutal and corrupt dictatorship under Mobutu and two wars (1996-1997 and 1998-2003). Voters went to the polls in overwhelming numbers to elect a new President out of 32 presidential candidates and 500 members of parliament out of 9000 candidates. If no clear winner emerges from this round of elections with a win of 50% plus of the vote, voters will go to the polls for the run-off election, on October 29.
