Peace and Security Council Report No 72
5 August 2015

The planned Peace and Security Council (PSC) field mission to Burundi was postponed indefinitely, and presidential elections went ahead on 21 July.

AMISOM, the AU’s flagship peacekeeping operation in Somalia, was dealt a blow when up to 80 Burundians were killed at the end of June.

The PSC held an emergency meeting on universal jurisdiction following the arrest of Rwanda’s security chief in London.

The AU briefed member states on the signing of the Arms Trade Treaty and urged more countries to ratify it.

Ambassador Usman Baraya, Chairperson of the PSC for June 2015, talks about the recent PSC summit, AU efforts in Burundi and Nigeria’s de facto permanent status as a member of the PSC.

The publication of the PSC Report is made possible through support from the Government of Switzerland, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the government of New Zealand and the Hanns Seidel Stiftung. The ISS is also grateful for the support of the following members of the ISS Partnership Forum: the governments of Australia, Canada, Denmark, Finland, Japan, Netherlands, Norway, Sweden and the USA.
