Annette Leijenaar joined the ISS as Conflict Management and Peacebuilding Division Head in May 2012. From 2000-2012 she served with the UN at HQ ( DPKO: Global Head of Peacekeeping Training, and at UNDSS: Chief of Desk for the Middle East, Asia and Pacific.) She served in the field in Botswana, Somalia, Liberia and Afghanistan. Before joining the UN she served in the SADF/SANDF from 1974 onwards, the last assignment being South Africa`s Military Attache in the UK. She attended the Joint Staff Course (JSC) in 1999 after returning from the UK. She holds a B Mil (Military Science), Hons B(B&A) and MBA from the Univeristy of Stellenbosch.
Dolence Pertunia Matabane joined ISS as a receptionist for Head office in Brooklyn. Before joining the Institute,she worked as a Reservation Admin consultant in Reservation Dept at SANparks.Her main focus are Receptionist duties & office support from Magazine Dept.and Admin work.Also taking care of stationary and control Petty cash for the Head office.
Gustavo de Carvalho joined the ISS as a Senior Researcher in the Conflict Management and Peacebuilding division in April 2014. Gustavo has extensive experience in capacity development, policy support and research initiatives in the peacebuilding field in Africa. From 2009 – 2014 he worked at the African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (ACCORD) as an Analyst at ACCORD’s arm of the Training for Peace (TfP) Programme, and later as Coordinator of its Peacebuilding Unit. Previously, Gustavo worked as a Researcher at Global Witness, a London-based organisation, in campaigns that related to the link between natural resources and conflict in both the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Somalia. Gustavo holds a bachelor degree in international relations from the University of Brasilia, and a MSc in African studies from the University of Oxford.
Liezelle Kumalo joined the ISS in March 2015 as a junior researcher in the Conflict Management and Peacebuilding division in Pretoria. She first worked for the ISS in March 2014 as a research intern in the same division, focusing on peacebuilding. Liezelle has a Masters degree in international relations from the University of Witwatersrand
Mandy Badenhorst started at the ISS in June 1995 as receptionist when the ISS was based in Midrand. She worked as Programme Assistant to the Crime and Policing Programme and then as Office Manager. In December 2000 she became consultant to the ISS maintaining its web site. She has also filled positions like Accounts Assistant, Human Resource Assistant and Publications Assistant. She is currently the Programme Administrator for the Peace Operations and Peacebuilding division.
Meressa Kahsu Dessu joined the ISS in October 2013 as a researcher and training coordinator in the Training for Peace Programme, which is part of the Conflict Management and Peacebuilding division. He is based in the Addis Ababa office. Before joining the ISS Meressa was an senior police officer (with a rank of Commander) working in different positions in the Ethiopian Federal Police Services. In this capacity, he also worked on the UN peace operation mission in South Sudan. He has 20 years’ experience in police operations, police training and security research.
Timothy Walker was appointed as a Researcher focusing on Maritime and Water Security in the Conflict Management and Peacebuilding (CMPB) Division at the ISS Tshwane (Pretoria) office in April 2013. Prior to this Timothy worked as an intern for the Conflict Prevention and Risk Analysis (CPRA) division at the ISS Tshwane (Pretoria) office from February 2011 to August 2011 before joining CMPB as a consultant to manage the Observatoire de l`Afrique programme in September 2011. Tim is a graduate of Rhodes University in Grahamstown, South Africa where he has read for degrees in Political and International Studies (BA, BA Hons and MA). His areas of interest include Maritime Security, Piracy and Robbery at Sea, Water Security, China-Africa relations, International Relations theory and Human Security.
