You can help Thuli Madonsela: how citizens can protect democracy and rights
Date: 24 May 2016
Time: 10h00 - 12h30
Venue: 6 Spin Street, Cape Town

In October the term of South Africa’s Public Protector Thuli Madonsela comes to an end. A public debate is needed to ensure that her successor is committed to the Constitution and the rule of law.

Citizens can make submissions to Parliament and influence the process.

This will be an important reminder that Chapter 9 institutions in general need support and scrutiny to ensure they fulfil their Constitutional mandates. The discussion will focus on citizen involvement in appointment processes and the efficacy of Chapter 9 institutions in general.

Chair: Judith February, Consultant, ISS

Speakers:

  • Adv Mathole Motshekga, chair of the Parliamentary Portfolio Committee on Justice
  • David Lewis, Director, Corruption Watch
  • Pierre de Vos, Professor of Public Law, University of Cape Town
