Kenya's Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission: Between principle and practice
Date: 20 June 2013
Time: 10h00 - 12h30
Venue: Conference room, ISS Nairobi

Kenya’s Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission (TJRC) released its final report on 22 May 2013. Set up by an Act of Parliament in 2008 (although it came into being in 2009) to establish an accurate and complete historical record of human and economic rights violations committed in Kenya between 12 December 1963 and 28 February 2008, the TJRC’s final report has, in near equal measure, elicited both criticism and approval. This seminar will examine the TJRC’s process and outcome and assess whether or not it succeeded in establishing an authoritative record of Kenya’s past abuses. It will also evaluate the extent to which the entire process has contributed toward healing and national reconciliation.

Chair: Emmanuel Kisiangani, Senior Researcher, ISS Nairobi
