ISS Roundtable Discussion: Promoting Ethics in Public Life: The Role of Disclosure Regulations
Cape Town, 6 July 2009

Closed event - by invitation only

There is global consensus that financial disclosure regulations remain one of the most popular and effective mechanisms for monitoring conflicts of interests in public life. South Africa has adopted a comprehensive approach to disclosure and implementation has been largely successful across the various legislatures and metropolitan councils. As the fourth democratic session commences these institutions will be calling upon their new and returning members once again to declare their financial and other interests.

à‚

The Conflicts of Interest project at the Institute for Security Studies invites you to attend a one-day closed-door roundtable, which brings together officials from across South Africa who are tasked with the implementation of disclosure regulations. Discussion will focus on different aspects disclosure, including compliance, monitoring and oversight, institutional support and public access to information. Recent research by the ISS will be presented to assist the discussion.

à‚

It is hoped that this meeting will facilitate dialogue among officials by sharing experiences, highlighting good practice and innovative solutions, and providing opportunity to workshop key implementation challenges. Participants will have the opportunity to reflect on the experiences of their particular institutions. The event also provides a secure and stimulating environment to identify and discuss key areas that remain vexing for ethics in public life, and which may require regulation in the future. Findings from the roundtable will be written up in a non-attributable Chatham House format and made available to participants shortly thereafter.
