Press Release: In Memoriam Sarah Meek
The Institute for Security Studies is saddened to announce the passing away of Sarah Meek in a car accident near Pretoria, South Africa on 26 October 2006.
Sarah returned to the ISS in January 2002 as Head of the Arms Management Programme after a break of three years. Earlier she had worked as a senior researcher in the same programme from 1996 to 1999. Early last year Sarah was promoted to the position of Head of Development at the ISS. In between working at the Institute she was manager of the security and peacebuilding programme at International Alert in London, a well known conflict prevention organisation. She has also worked at the United Nations in New York and the Monterey Institute for International Studies in California.
Sarah was truly dedicated to the work of the ISS and has played a significant role in the development of the Institute over a number of years. It was our privilege to have her as a colleague. She served to mentor many at the ISS and her passing away will leave a tremendous gap. A person of enormous energy and dedication, she exemplified integrity and commitment.
Our sympathies go to Sarah`s family, colleagues and friends during this difficult time. Our condolences to her husband Mike in particular. She was a pillar of strength at the ISS and a person that will be sorely missed.
Jakkie Cilliers, Executive Director on behalf of all ISS staff.
