Press Release: Africans celebrating the International Day of Peace
20 September 2010

The Institute for Security Studies (ISS) is pleased to announce plans to celebrate the United Nations proclaimed International Day of Peace on the 21st of September 2010 by starting the recruitment process for a Dean of the ISS Peace Academy. The Academy will be based in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and is a joint initiative by the ISS and the Geneva Centre for Security Policy (GCSP). The purpose of the Academy is to develop, teach and propagate appropriate solutions to the myriad security challenges that face the continent.

During June 2010 the Institute entered into a partnership with the African Union in support of the decision on the Year of Peace and Security (YoPS) in Africa that was adopted by the 14th Ordinary Session of AU Heads of State in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia in February 2010. Subsequently, during the recent Kampala Summit, African Heads of State and Government welcomed the proposed establishment of the ISS Peace Academy as an important tool for the enhancement of Africa`s capacity in the area of peace and security.

Executive Director of the ISS, Dr. Jakkie Cilliers, stated "the ISS Peace Academy was a concrete example of the support that the ISS provides to building peace on the continent" and expressed the hope that the International Day of Peace will mark the beginning of a new era for the continent in building a sustainable and productive Africa.

In partnership with the AU the Institute also embarked on various outreach activities in support of the YoPS, including the branding of the ISS website, publications, correspondence and outreach material with the YoPS logo. The Institute website, www.issafrica.org, is one of the largest, most comprehensive websites on African peace in security, while the Institute is the largest independent research, training and technical assistance agencies on African issues globally.

Each ISS office will be hosting a special event on 21st September. The ISS Cape Town Office will be hosting the public seminar "Making peace happen is governance; The missing dimension in Africa", the ISS Pretoria Office will host the seminar "African Prospects for Peace", while the seminar "Challenges to Peace and Security in the Horn of Africa: Analysis of Al-Shabaab Threats and Attacks" will be hosted by the ISS Nairobi Office at the Intercontinental Hotel, Nairobi and finally, the ISS Addis Ababa our office will be co-hosting a candle light peace vigil on the 20th in Meskel Square with the Ethiopian International Institute for Peace and Development starting at 18h30, hosted at the Sheraton Hotel in Addis Ababa and include peace day messages from the Ethiopian Government, the African Union, the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD), the UN family and various faith based organizations.

longside the activities listed above, all ISS offices will respect a one-minute silence for peace across Africa at 10:00am GMT on September 21st, in accordance with the African Union.
